Google is growing its Pixel phone lineup this year with the launch of the Pixel 9 series, which now includes four models: the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Each model features a refreshed design, new Tensor G4 processors, and a range of AI-driven enhancements.
The Pixel 9’s design has shifted towards a more modern look, with flat sides replacing the curved edges of previous models, giving it an appearance similar to the iPhone from the front. However, the back is uniquely Pixel, featuring a new elongated camera bar that stands out with its floating camera oval design.
The Pixel 9 Pro lineup offers more variety in size, with the standard Pixel 9 boasting a 6.3-inch display, and the Pro XL offering a larger 6.8-inch screen. Positioned in between is the Pixel 9 Pro, combining the size of the Pixel 9 with the advanced features of the Pro models.
Google’s foldable phone, now named the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, has also received updates, including a thinner profile — just 5.1mm when unfolded — and a taller form factor with a 6.3-inch outer screen. This model is slimmer and more refined than its predecessor, making it a standout in the foldable phone market.
All Pro models now come with 16GB of RAM, while the standard Pixel 9 has been upgraded to 12GB of RAM. This added power is especially useful for running AI applications, such as the new Gemini Nano model, which can analyze images, speech, and text all on-device.
Google also introduced new AI features exclusive to the Pixel 9 series. One notable feature is a tool similar to Microsoft’s Recall that organizes and retrieves information from screenshots, but it only works on manually captured screenshots. There’s also a new app called Pixel Studio, which uses AI to create illustrations based on text prompts.
As with previous Pixel models, the camera remains a major focus. The new Magic Editor tool can now completely transform parts of an image using text prompts, and a new feature called Add Me allows users to add themselves to group photos with AI-generated precision. Additionally, all models in the series come with upgraded ultrawide cameras and a new 42Mp selfie camera on the Pro models.
A major addition to the Pixel 9 series is Satellite SOS, which lets users connect with emergency services when they are outside of cell coverage. This feature will be available later this year, along with the rollout of Android 15. Until then, the new devices will ship with Android 14 but are promised seven years of updates and security patches.
For video enthusiasts, the Pro models offer Video Boost, an AI-powered feature that can upscale footage to 8K resolution and enhance digitally zoomed video for smoother transitions.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, while thinner and lighter than previous foldables, features slightly lower camera specs compared to its Pro counterparts. However, it boasts an 8-inch inner display, which is much brighter than before, reaching a peak brightness of 2,700 nits, making it ideal for outdoor use.
The new Pixel 9 series will be available starting August 22nd, with prices starting at $799 for the Pixel 9. The Google Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL will cost $999 and $1,099, respectively. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, priced at $1,799, will be available on September 4th.
