If you are planning to bring or import a mobile phone into Pakistan, you must register the device with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and pay the applicable custom duties/taxes. Without registration, your device will be blocked from accessing any local mobile networks (Mobilink/Jazz, Telenor, Zong, Ufone) after 60 days of insertion of a local SIM.

When registering a mobile phone, you have two registration options that carry different tax rates:
- Passport Registration: Offered to international travelers arriving in Pakistan. If you register your phone within 60 days of travel using your passport number, you will get a discounted tax rate. Only one phone can be registered per passport per calendar year.
- CNIC Registration: Standard tax registration for local citizens who did not travel abroad recently. Standard customs and FBR duties apply.

The Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) was launched by the PTA to eliminate the smuggling and illegal import of mobile phones in Pakistan. The tax amounts are calculated dynamically by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) based on the device's USD price, category, and technical specifications (such as 4G or 5G capability).
