According to a report published in Dawn newspaper, following the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan, violent protests erupted, prompting the government to shut down mobile internet on May 9th and block Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, where videos inciting violence were being shared.
Four days later, on Friday, after intense pressure from various circles to restore internet and social media sites, the Ministry of Interior ordered the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to lift the restrictions.
Mobile Phone internet services were restored around 10 PM, but Twitter and other social media websites remained inaccessible throughout the week. According to the authorities of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the ban on Twitter was not lifted because the Ministry had instructed the PTA not to open the platform.
A senior official from the Ministry of Information, on the condition of anonymity, stated that the government is concerned that social media platforms will be used by the opposition for political gains.
