The foldable smartphone market is experiencing rapid growth, significantly outpacing the overall smartphone market. Despite the potential profitability, Apple has yet to enter this market. However, numerous rumours suggest that a foldable iPhone could be in development in the coming years.
According to a new report from TrendForce, Apple is “unlikely to release a foldable phone before 2027”. This delay stems from the company’s “strict requirements for crease and reliability.” Unlike Samsung, Apple aims for a foldable screen that shows no crease when unfolded. Reliability likely refers to Apple’s desire for a folding mechanism that remains functional for many years.
TrendForce analysts indicate that Apple is still “evaluating component specifications and performance” for its first iPhone Fold. If the release is set for 2027, as previously suggested, development might not commence until next year, allowing Apple suppliers time to meet the company’s exacting standards.
In the meantime, the foldable smartphone market has seen a significant shift. In the first quarter of this year, Huawei surpassed Samsung to become the best-selling brand globally for foldable devices. However, Samsung might reclaim the top spot with the upcoming launch of its Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 next month.
Adding a twist to the competition, Huawei plans to launch the world’s first tri-fold smartphone between July and September. This innovative device could potentially disrupt Samsung’s celebration plans and further intensify the rivalry in the foldable smartphone market.
