Last week, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold6, which measures 5.6mm thick when unfolded and 12.1mm thick when folded. Despite these impressive dimensions, the device still appears bulky compared to some Chinese competitors. However, Samsung aims to significantly reduce the thickness of its next foldable smartphone, according to a report by KED Global.
TM Roh, President and Head of Samsung’s MX team, has reportedly tasked the engineers with developing an extra slim foldable smartphone. Industry sources indicate that Roh’s goal is to achieve a thickness comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S24 when folded. The Samsung Galaxy S24 measures 7.6mm thick, with the S24+ and S24 Ultra at 7.7mm and 8.6mm, respectively.
Achieving the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s thickness would make Samsung’s next foldable 3.5mm slimmer than the Galaxy Z Fold6 in its folded state. This would also represent a 1.3mm reduction from the Fold5’s thickness. Additionally, the MX team is reportedly working to bring the weight of the next foldable below 239g, the current weight of the Galaxy Z Fold6. Samsung is also rumored to unveil a Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim by the end of 2024, featuring a thickness of just 10mm. This model will include an 8-inch folding screen, larger than the Galaxy Z Fold6’s 7.6-inch display.
