Samsung is betting big on AI as the future of mobile devices. We’ve already seen new AI features in the latest Galaxy phones, but according to TM Roh, president of Samsung’s Mobile Experience unit (MX), the hardware of future devices could be radically different from what we know today.
In an interview with the Australian Financial Review, Roh revealed that most of Samsung MX’s research and development is now centered on AI phones. While he didn’t give specific details about what these phones will look like, Roh’s comment about them being radically different hints that the usual rectangular design might change. He mentioned that AI phones will be more mobile, meaning bigger screens and more sensors than smaller sizes.
Current models like the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold6 already use AI with their S Pen support to turn sketches into detailed images. AI isn’t just for images, though—it can also enhance audio, text, video, 3D, and more.
Samsung also integrates AI into its headphones, adding features like language translation. Accessories might play a big role in this new AI strategy. Foldable phones with dual screens are especially good for features like interpreter mode. Although some AI phones are on the market now, none have succeeded. This means Samsung is exploring new ground, requiring a significant investment in research and development.
