Corning has launched its latest product, Gorilla Glass 7i, tailored specifically for mid-range and budget-friendly smartphones. This new glass aims to provide premium durability features typically reserved for higher-end models, making advanced protection more accessible.
Corning’s introduction of Gorilla Glass 7i, described as a seventh-generation product, aligns with its existing high-end Gorilla Glass Victus but is distinctly designed for less expensive devices. The “i” in the name stands for industry-leading innovation for intermediate devices, highlighting its focus on bringing top-tier technology to more affordable price points.
Gorilla Glass 7i can withstand drops from up to 1 meter (about 3.3 feet) onto hard surfaces like asphalt—double the height resistance of its competitors. It also offers twice the scratch resistance of comparable glasses in mid-range phones.
This innovation comes in response to the aging Gorilla Glass 5, introduced in 2016, which is still used in popular models such as the Nothing Phone (2a) and Poco F6 Pro. With phone screens growing larger and incorporating features like 10-bit and 12-bit OLED displays, there was a clear demand for a more modern, durable glass solution that could meet the needs of today’s larger, more feature-rich mid-range phones.
Oppo will be the first manufacturer to release a smartphone featuring Gorilla Glass 7i, and the company is expected to announce more details soon. The new glass is also suitable for other consumer electronics, including smartwatches, that require robust scratch and impact resistance.
Corning’s Gorilla Glass 7i represents a strategic step towards enhancing the durability of devices across all market segments, emphasizing sustainability as these products reach mass production.
