Apple is making strides in the foldable device market, although its recent event primarily highlighted software developments, leaving hardware enthusiasts hungry for more. Sources reveal that Apple is developing two foldable devices: a 20.3-inch MacBook and a 7.9-inch iPhone.
According to analyst Jeff Pu, the foldable iPhone will feature an innovative outward folding design akin to the Huawei Mate Xs 2. This design allows the device to sport a single display that wraps around the front and back when folded and transitions into a flat, seamless screen upon opening. While Pu predicts a release by late 2026, some analysts are eyeing a 2027 launch.
The foldable MacBook, expected to debut in 2025, draws comparisons to the ThinkPad X1 with its inward folding mechanism. This design incorporates a wireless keyboard that can be stowed between the folds when closed, providing functionality and compactness. The inward fold protects the flexible screen, allowing laptop-like usage at about a 90-degree angle.
Outward folding devices like the anticipated iPhone eliminate the need for a separate cover display, reducing weight, thickness, and cost. Thanks to the extensive screen coverage on the back, this design offers enhanced customization and convenient main-camera selfies. However, the major drawback is the constant exposure of the delicate foldable display to potential damage.
The quicker progress on the foldable MacBook compared to the iPhone might be attributed to the complexities associated with the iPhone’s outward folding design, suggesting that Apple is cautiously refining this innovative approach.
