Apple has updated its warranty guidelines, resulting in a significant change for iPhone and Apple Watch users. As of this week, hairline cracks, which previously qualified for free repair under the standard warranty, are now classified as accidental damage. This policy shift affects mobile phones and Apple Watches but does not apply to iPads and Macs, which continue to be eligible for free repair in cases of hairline cracks.
Under the new policy, repairs for such damages on iPhones and Watches will no longer be covered unless the customer has AppleCare+. For instance, with AppleCare+, a screen replacement for an iPhone 15 Pro Max, typically priced at $380, will be reduced to $29. However, this protection comes with a monthly subscription cost of $10 or a prepaid sum of $200 for two years. Additional coverage for theft and loss is available at a higher premium.
The reasoning behind Apple’s policy adjustment remains unclear, as does the duration that iPads and Macs will retain the free repair benefit for hairline cracks. iPhone users, particularly those without AppleCare+, may want to consider using a screen protector to mitigate potential repair costs in the future.
